Let's Go Fishing!

Can some one please pick me up and take me to San Gabriel Park? I heard Georgetown Parks & Recreation just dumped 1,000 catfish into the river, and I'm hungry.

Apparently, there is a Fishing Derby in town this Saturday. I also heard my Mom is in charge of this event? My mom in charge of a Fishing Derby? She knows as much about fishing as I know about why female dogs are such bitches - nothing!

Anyway, swing by and pick me up and let's go eat some catfish!

Tuesday...

I'm too hungover from exorbitant amounts of Easter treats to write much this morning. I've also been busy trying to get all of the cotton out of my mouth after the murder of my Easter Bunny and Lulu's stuffed lamb. Had someone forewarned me that they only had cotton inside of them, I would have spared their lives. Unfortunately, now their insides are scattered all over the house, much to Mom's dismay. Oh well, you live, you learn.

Good Friday

They tell me it's Good Friday...but Mom has to work, and I still haven't gotten a corn dog. So, tell me what's so good about that?

Easter Came Early!

Easter came early for this guy. Ssshhh, don't tell the Old Man but Mom gave us our Easter Baskets early since the Old Man is out of town. She promised us another one come Easter Day. I love being spoiled.

Oh yeah, if it looks like I am giving Lulu the stink eye in this photo, I am. Don't want that #$%#@ touching my Easter treat.

Ode to the Corn Dog

I think I'm going to boycott this blog until someone (MOM!) buys me a corn dog. It's been way too long since I've indulged in a great American Corn Dog.

Ever since last week I have craved you Mr. Corn Dog. Your crispy crunchy outer-ness and your flavorful soft hot doggy center. Twice now this week I have sought out for you and twice I have failed.

It only takes $1.50 to fry my soul with battered pig remains. Time separated and taste mocked, but soon you will be mine! I will munch you up ever so fast and put my taste buds, finally, to rest.

Dear Grandma...

Dear Grandma,

Just wondering if you were planning to send me an Easter Basket? Preferably one with pork ears, bacon, corn dogs and squeaky toys. None of that healthy crap either, like carrots and green beans that Mom has been trying to feed us lately. To be honest, I'm having doubts that the Easter Bunny is going to pull through for me, but I know you will. Also, please do not put Lulu's name on the package, I would prefer not to share with her.

One last favor...can you include some deodorant for the Old Man? His body odor has been pretty questionable lately. Oh yeah, and some new running shoes for Mom as well?

Thank you in advance. I'll be sitting by the window waiting for the mailman.

DUH...

Old Man left the sprinkler on overnight and flooded our lawn and the neighbors lawn. Mom didn't notice it until she left for her run at 6:00 am this morning. I was pretty pissed to have to get my paws soaked on my morning walk. I think I need to take over as head of the household...clearly, Old Man is not capable.

Egg Hunting Dogs

Mom's busy at work this week planning the City of Georgetown's Annual Easter Egg Hunt for children this coming Saturday.

Easter makes me think, how do bunny rabbits get all those eggs they distribute?

Do they pay the chickens for them? Do they steal them? Or do they have a huge bunny production facility that creates them? If created, will the factory have to purchase carbon credit offsets next year? And what will that do for the number of eggs produced?

They’re legitimate questions, but I suppose many of you are probably thinking, “Flash, why can’t you just focus on the fun side for a change. Can’t you just enjoy Easter for the celebration it is?”

I guess I could if it wasn’t for the fact I’m not allowed to eat meat on Fridays, plus this charcoal patch on my forehead still hasn’t completely washed away. What kind of holiday season is that? In fact, substituting so much salmon for meat has given me a strong urge to swim up river and jump into a bear’s mouth.

But the following story illustrates some upside to Easter for dogs in the Illinois (pronounced Ill – e – noise) area.

TROY, Ill. – Donna Elief planted her feet firmly in the grass, held the megaphone up to her mouth and yelled: “Three, two, one. Hunt some eggs!”

And with that, a hundred or so dogs – tiny ones, shaggy ones, old and young ones, from Chihuahuas to Shiba Inus to Great Danes – went scampering into a field, noses down and tails wagging, searching for Easter eggs.

When the dogs’ noses touched the eggs – actually pastel-colored plastic ones containing dog treats – their owners picked them up, placing them in baskets or bags. The goal was to locate the “surprise egg,” which entitles the finder to a gift basket with chew toys and a flea treatment.

The Canine Easter Egg Hunt, held by the Hawthorne Animal Hospital and now in its fourth year, is a benefit event for the TreeHouse Wildlife Center near Alton, which takes care of wounded and orphaned wildlife. The event has cultivated some regulars, now veterans of the hunt, generating hundreds of dollars for the center.

“We come back every year,” said Priscilla Briggs of Granite City, as Nellie the collie and Freddie the sheltie panted nearby. “They just like to go out and have fun.”

Moments before the hunt began, the dogs and their owners lined up at the edge of the field – organized into four separate hunting zones for different sized dogs, “so the little ones aren’t getting stomped by the big ones,” Weishaupt explained.

The dogs charged in, finding all the eggs within minutes.

Not bad if you’re looking for a little exercise, but for me, I’ll just head to the local diner and get my eggs the way I like them…over easy.

Crazy Dog Lady

This is a picture of Mom's computer screen at work. Please take note of the wallpaper on the monitor background (as if you could miss it). Can anyone say CRAZY DOG LADY!?
If only there were that many clones of me we could take over the world...

Turn Out The Lights!

This is what I look like at 4:45 am when Mom gets up to run and wakes me up. I barked 'Turn Out the Lights, Lady! I'm trying to sleep.' That woman is CUH-RAZY!

Letter to the Easter Bunny

I know it's still a few weeks until Easter, but I wanted to get my letter to the Easter Bunny out so he had plenty of time to take care of my requests.

Dear Easter Bunny:
I have been a good boy this year, and have been keeping my paws to myself and trying not fight with my sister. Please send me a stuffed squeaky toy and some pig ears for Easter. I look forward to seeing you on Easter Sunday.

Yours truly,

Out of Commission

No can blog today, I'm at the vet. Typing this on my blackberry, so it has to be short.

Mom said we were going for a ride this morning. I was all excited until we ended up at the vet....duped again. I bet this was the Old Man's idea.

It looks like I'm here for a bath, ear cleaning and nail trimming. I'm not happy about it, but I will behave unless I get touched inappropriately in the process.

The good thing about a trip to the vet is that Mom usually feels guilty afterward and takes us for corn dogs.

Woof!

Easter Warning for Dogs

What’s white on the outside, yellow on the inside and in abundant quantities this time of year?

It’s eggs silly…and the type we canines can partake in.

Don’t be fooled by cheap imitations. Take the Cadbury Egg, for instance, which is yellow on the inside, but a discolored brown on the outside. Sure it tastes sweet, almost too sweet, but instead of pumping you full of life, it will suck it out of you.

How many Cadbury eggs do you think could Flash have eaten? My guess is he’d max out at 17 before a sugar coma put him out of commission for a 72 hour nap.

One thing is for sure, there’d be no way he could be jostled around in the back of a patrol car on pursuit of the Duke Boys the next day.

And that’s the effect on the most famous basset of all! Imagine what it could do to a poor old dog like you.

OK, I’m rambling on like my mother. We’re talking eggs so let me serve you up a cautionary tail (you get it?) for all the Easter Egg loving canines out there.

The five-stone pooch ended up with chocolate poisoning after wolfing down a stash of chocolate eggs which he found hidden away in his owner’s spare room.

Five-year-old Buster had to be taken to animal hospital where he was admitted to intensive care after devouring 12 eggs and their foil wrapping.

Buster’s owner, Brenda Dawes, bought the eggs as Easter treats for her grandchildren.

She said: “When I arrived home one afternoon, Buster came down the stairs, wagging his tail and licking his lips. I knew immediately he’d been up to something.

“He’s a terror and chews everything he gets his paws on – mobile phones, video tapes, the remote control.”

At first, Buster did not appear to be affected by his binge. However, Ms Dawes was woken in the early hours of the morning by the pet’s cries.

“He couldn’t stand up, his back legs just kept buckling underneath him.

“His stomach was swollen and he was obviously in a lot of pain. Panicking, I called PDSA and they told me to bring him straight in.”

Ms Dawes immediately took the dog to animal charity PDSA’s PetAid hospital, near her home in Derby, where he was treated with fluids and kept in for round-the-clock observation.

Buster made a full recovery, but his ordeal has prompted animal welfare officials to issue a pre-Easter warning to anyone who keeps hungry hounds and chocolate under the same roof.

Senior veterinary surgeon Vicky Sims said: “Buster was quite lucky. Creme eggs have a fairly low theobromine content because they’re half fondant.

“Higher quality ‘posh’ chocolates are the most dangerous as they have high concentrated doses of theobromine – which poisons pets.

Many people are simply not aware that even small amounts of human chocolate can kill a little dog. If you want to indulge your pet you should opt for a healthy pet treat instead.

Ms Dawes said: “He’s already tried to eat a bag of crisps and a toilet roll since he’s been home – I’ll have to keep a close eye on him from now on to keep him out of trouble.”

Consider this your post-Easter warning. If you want something sweet, just down a peep. Any peep will do. I prefer the short ones with chocolate on their faces.
